UPDATE: Assailant in Liberty shooting identified

UPDATE: 8/6 – The identity of the assailant who died in a shootout with police in Liberty has been released.

Liberty officers responded to the 1000 block of Highland Road Saturday afternoon after calls were reportedly received from Eric Richards, 33, who made comments about a mass shooting, and suicide. Liberty police claim, Richards fired on officers with a rifle, and subsequently received fatal injuries from return fire. Those officers are on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated. No officers were injured.

LIBERTY, Mo. – An officer involved shooting happened in Liberty early Saturday evening.

Police say the man called the police department and made comments about a mass shooting and suicide. According to a Police Department spokesman, officers and Clay County deputies were dispatched to Highland Drive near Bradford Street in the 7 p.m. hour. The spokesperson confirmed a 33 year old subject fired a rifle at officers before he was shot and killed.

The identity of the man is not being released at this time.
