INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) — A suburban Kansas City man has been charged with fatally shooting his mother in her home. Fifty-eight-year-old Richard Ohearn of Independence was charged Saturday with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Prosecutors requested a cash bond of $500,000.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A 16-year-old boy is charged with shooting at a city bus and injuring three passengers. Jackson County juvenile authorities charged the boy with first- and second-degree assault and armed criminal action. One victim was shot in the hand Thursday, while the other two were cut with broken glass.

FULTON, Mo. (AP) — A nuclear power plant near Fulton has shut down after a small fire in the turbine building. Ameren Missouri said in a news release that crews quickly extinguished the Friday night fire at the Callaway Energy Center. The utility stressed that no one was injured and that the public wasn’t threatened.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — A steady stream of speakers at a Columbia Medicaid reform hearing urged a panel of citizens and Missouri lawmakers Saturday to not only reform but also expand the government-funded health care program. The dozens of speakers included doctors, disability advocates, hospital executives and citizens who would become eligible for Medicaid under expansion envisioned by the federal Affordable Care Act.

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — A former Joplin middle school teacher is accused of using a teenage girl to produce child pornography. 39-year-old Charles Gastel of Carterville was charged Friday in federal court with sexual exploitation of children. It’s unclear if he has an attorney. The affidavit says Gastel’s son saw a video on his father’s laptop computer that depicted a sexual assault. The victim told authorities that two or three videos were created when she was 16, but the abuse began when she was 10.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A 30-year-old Springfield man has been charged with fatally shooting his girlfriend. Jonathan Greer has been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in Thursday’s killing of 34-year-old Angela Holbrook. Bond has been set at $200,000. A probable cause statement released Friday says Greer and Holbrook had been drinking alcohol and arguing before the shooting.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri attorney general’s office will assist in the case of a Springfield man accused of dumping a teenager girl’s body in a southwest Missouri lake. The body of 15-year-old Khighla Parks of Willard was found in September in Truman Lake. A Springfield man, 47-year-old Anthony Balbirnie, is charged with abandonment of a corpse. Park was last seen with Balbirnie at a home in Buffalo. Park’s death has been ruled a homicide. But no one has been charged in her killing.

KINGDOM CITY, Mo. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a fire that killed a 48-year-old man at a former Missouri towing company. The body of William Reeg Junior was found Friday inside the burned structure, formerly Roger’s Towing. He had been living in a residential area in the upper level of the building with a woman and her child. The woman was able to escape, and the child wasn’t home when the fire broke out Thursday night.
