BENTON COUNTY, Mo. — A Lincoln man has been charged with murder in Benton County after he allegedly shot another man on Friday, January 12.

According to a post on the Benton County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, deputies were called to the 19000 block of Zion Church Road just outside of Lincoln at about 9:08 p.m. last Friday to reports of a possible shooting at a mobile home park.

Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement officials found a man outside a residence with an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen. The victim was identified as Caleb L.D. Shephard, 27, of Cole Camp.

Shephard was treated at the scene and taken to a predetermined landing site for an air ambulance where he died before the helicopter was able to arrive.

A preliminary investigation found that the man living in the residence where the shooting happened had likely fired the shots, however further details were not immediately available.

William J. Heffernan, 21, of Lincoln, is now charged with second degree murder, armed criminal action and tampering with evidence. Bond has been set for Heffernan at $100,000 cash or surety. The investigation is currently ongoing.
