An Alma man was in a Lafayette Co. courtroom Tuesday morning for a motions hearing.  Dennis Schmalz, 61, is charged with a total of eight felonies, which include two counts of distribution of a controlled substance, and one count each of maintaining a public nuisance, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, members of the Crisis Action Team reportedly found drugs, paraphernalia and firearms during a search of his home in the 28000 block of Goodwin Road in June.  An arrest warrant was issued following an investigation by the Lafayette Co. Drug Task Force.

Online court records indicate Schamlz’s attorney mae a motion to reduce bond, which the state  is opposed to. Schmalz is currently being held on a $100,000 cash bond. Judge Shackelford said the request for a reduction would be taken under advisement. A motion to have his bond reduced was denied during a hearing in early July.

Schmalz will next appear in court on October 3rd at 9:00 a.m. for a preliminary hearing.
