MISSOURI — Outdoor enthusiasts have prevailed in the fight over the expansion of a cattle lot near Lone Jack.
The Missouri Clean Water Commission on Monday rejected a petition from the Valley Oaks Feed Co. to expand the Valley Oaks feedlot operation near Powell Gardens in Johnson County.
The proposal called for the current cattle lot, numbering fewer than 1,000 head, to expand to nearly 7,000 head of cattle.
Despite promises from the plan’s proponents that the operation would maintain strict environmental standards, commissioners elected to reject the plan.
Detractors, such as environmental activists and Powell Gardens employees and patrons, argued the dramatic expansion of cattle would lead to excessive pollution and would have a negative impact on the gardens, regarded as one of western Missouri’s best botanical offerings.
