A former Grandview police officer was sentenced to life in prison plus 50 years without parole for the 2008 murder of Cara Jo Roberts.  Jeffrey Moreland, 54, was sentenced in October, shortly after his conviction by a jury. According to court documents, she was shot in the back of the head and found in a bath tub inside her Harrisonville home.

Moreland is now awaiting trial in the 2010 stabbing and strangulation death of Nina Whitney, 75, of Jackson County.  Investigators said DNA evidence collected from a June 2011 sexual assault of another Harrisonville woman linked Moreland to both Roberts’ and Whitney’s deaths.  He faces criminal charges in the 2010 and 2011 cases.

Moreland will be in Cass County Court Monday morning for a case review of the 2011 charges at 9:30 a.m.
