Wednesday, June 19

The Livingston County Health Center is having a “Diabetes Program” on Wednesday, June 19 from 1-3 p.m.

Thursday, June 20
The Marshall Chamber of Commerce is having the 92nd annual Awards Banquet Thursday, June 22 at 6:00 p.m. at the Martin Community Center. The event features an open bar, dinner, and memorabilia from the past. This is a members only event for more information contact the chamber at (660)-886-3324.
From now until July 13th five brave souls have mustered the courage to pucker up and be counted as candidates in the Senior Center’s 5th Annual Pig Kissin’ at the Carroll County Fair Contest. The contestants include: Administrator Sheri Calvin, Sheriff Troy Hofstetter, Police Chief Donnie King, Mayor Bryan Mathis, and Fire Chief Curtis Shields. The person with most votes will have to kiss the pig at the state fair. Votes can be cast at A&J’s Wasted Space, Breaktime, Burger Bar & Dari Maid, Carroll County Trust Company, Charlie’s Tire, and First National Bank. One penny equals one vote. The winner will be announced at the Fair on Saturday, July 13th at 7:30 p.m.
Friday, June 21
Lexington is having a “Midsommar on Main Street” block party on Friday, June 21 and all day Saturday, June 22. On Friday, shops will be open until 9 p.m. with a blues concert, an art stroll, and Swedish appetizers. On Saturday, they will have a car show, farmers markets, ice cream social, afternoon tea, and more.
The Uptown Theatre is showing Escape From Planet Earth on Friday, June 21 at 7:00 p.m. in Marceline. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and concession will be available. Admission is free. For more information contact Rachel Lambert at (660)-734-2905.
The Missouri Department of Conservation is celebrating Summer with frogging season, beginning on Friday, June 21 and runs through October 31 in the state of Missouri. Residents with fishing permits can hunt bullfrogs and green frogs during the season. For more information visit mdc.mo.gov.
The Lexington Chamber of Commerce is hosting an opportunity to meet with recently hired Community Arts Specialist Mark Porth on Friday, June 21 from 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Old House Society at 1105 Main Street in Lexington.
Saturday, June 22
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is holding the “Get Ready, Get Set, Go!” 5K run on Saturday, June 22 at the Jefferson City Memorial Airport.  Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the run begins at 9 a.m. The public is invited to take part of the 5K event. The entry fees are $25 for adults and $10 for children under 16 if registered by June 1. Race-day entry fees are $30 for adults and $15 for children. To register, visit www.msho.dps.mo.gov.
Smithville will hold it 18th Annual Antique Show and Flea Market Saturday, June 22 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is sponsored by the Heritage Business District in the Community Courtyard, in downtown Smithville.
The Linneus United Methodist Church will have its annual Fish Fry on Saturday, June 22 from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Thorne Activity Center. There will be fish, baked beans, cheesy potatoes, hush puppies, coleslaw, and dessert. For more information call Franklin Holloway at 660-258-3610.

The Oasis Bar and Grill in Hale is holding an Aces for Autism card tournament on Saturday, June 22nd.  Donations for a silent auction are being requested.  The live auction starts at 7 p.m. The Oasis Bar and Grill will be serving throughout the event. His Little Lambs Child Development Center is holding its annual Carnival and Family Fun Day on Saturday, June 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Concordia Southside Park. The nonprofit organization DIGS, Inc. is having a 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, June 22 at 9:00 a.m. The event features the 5k at 10:00 a.m., a donated lunch at 10:45, an open house from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and a raffle drawing at 12:30.The cost for the Run/Walk is $35.00, which also includes a t-shirt and wristband.
The city of Marshall is hosting the first annual city-wide garage sale on Saturday, June 22 at 7:00 a.m. There are 87 yard sales signed up. Maps can be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce.

The Slater American Legion is hosting benefit dinner, auction, and dance on Saturday, June 22 from 4-7 p.m. The menu includes pulled pork, bbq beef, Ham, sides and desserts. The Norborne Family Career and Community Leaders of America will be pumping gas and washing windows on Saturday, June 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, June 23 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Casey’s in Norborne. The event is being held to raise money to help the group make their way to the National and State FCCLA Conferences.
The Lexington State Historic Site is hosting a Victorian Tea on Saturday, June 22 from 1-4 p.m. at the Anderson House. The event features tea and desserts of the mid-1800s. Sunday, June 23
State Fair Community College will offer a National Rifle Association-certified Basic Pistol course on Sunday, June 23. Class will meet from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Potter-Ewing Agriculture Building Room on the Sedalia campus.  Range times will be held at Sedalia Rod and Gun Club. The cost is $69, plus an $8 materials fee payable when the class meets. Students must be 13 or older to take the course.  A parent or guardian must enroll with minors.  Students will take an exam and receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course. The Dover Christian Church will be holding its annual strawberry and ice cream social at the church in Dover on Saturday, June 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. Homemade cakes, strawberries and ice cream. There will also be a hamburger stand and country store.
The St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salisbury is hosting an event on Sunday, June 23. The event features a meal from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., live entertainment, raffles, picnic booths, and food stands. Monday, June 24
University of Missouri Extension will have a follow up program to their “Corn Silage Production for Beef Cattle Producers” on Monday, June 24 at the Windor Livestock Auction beginning at 7 p.m. The program topics are “Harvesting and Storing Quality Silage,” and “Utilizing Corn Silage in Beef Cattle Rations.” Speakers include Dr. Tony Rickard, MU Extension Dairy Specialist in Cassville, and Gene Schmitz, MU Extension Livestock Specialist in Warsaw. Rich Lawson of Warrensburg will speak on Arrow Rock and vicinity history on Monday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Warrensburg. Refreshments will start at 7 p.m. The public is invited.
Central Methodist University is holding the Eagle Days fall registration program on Friday, June 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the CMU Student and Community Center. The Sedalia Public Works Department will be spraying for misquitos on Monday, June 24 and Tuesday, June 25. On Monday the spraying will begin at Broadway Avenue to the South City limits, then from the west to east city limits. The Saline County MU Extension Center is holding a “Social Security Retirement Seminar” on Tuesday, June 25 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The class is designed to teach strategies for maximizing benefits. The Lafayette County Federated Republican Women are holding a public meeting on Thursday, June 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Lafayette Hall, 10th and Franklin in Lexington. Friday, June 28
State Fair Community College is offering basic motorcycle classes on Friday, June 28 through Sunday, June 30.   Friday, the class will be held from 6 to 10 a.m.  On Saturday and Sunday, it will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The course includes a minimum of five hours of class room instruction in Room 609 of the Automotive Technology Building and at least 10 hours of practical riding in a controlled environment. The Farris Youth Theater Company in Richmond will perform Annie, Jr. on Friday, June 28 at 7 p.m., Saturday, June 29 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, June 30 at 2 p.m. at the Farris Theater. Saturday, June 29
The Lexington Community Fair Committee is having the “Lexington Blooms with Garden Artistry” tour on Saturday, June 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Lexington City Hall, Gypsy Vardo, Missouri River Antique Company, River Wild Artistry, or Designs by Diane. Tickets will be available the night of the tour at the Lafayette County Courthouse starting at 3:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10.
The Norborne Fire Department will have its Independence Day Firework Celebration on Saturday, June 29. There will also be a pork chop dinner at 5 p.m. at the Goppert Center. The fireworks display will be at the school grounds at dusk. For more information call Ryan Miller at 660-322-0133.
The Chilhowee Baptist Church will have a church picnic on Saturday, June 29 at 6 p.m. at the Chilhowee Baptist Church. There will be hot-dogs, burgers, chips, drinks, and watermelon. Bring your own lawn chair. There will be a firework display at dusk.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is hosting a pesticide pick up on Saturday, June 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Clinton Street Department Lot at 801 E. Sedalia Avenue. The event will allow Missouri households and farmers to safely and legally dispose of pesticides, insecticides, de-wormers, fly tags, and fertilizers containing herbicides or pesticides. The Nutrition Center is hosting an event with a cook-off and live music on Saturday, June 29 from 4:30-7:00 p.m. at 401 Main Street Polo, Missouri.  A pitch tournament will follow the cook off. The entry fee for the contest is $1.00.
Saint Luke’s North Hospital is holding the 2013 Wellness Expo on Saturday, June 29 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the Smithville campus. The event features free cholesterol and glucose testing, free health screenings, health and wellness booths, children activities, and an ambulance and firetruck tour. The event is free to attend.
Sunday, June 30

The Fort Osage School District invites the community to enjoy nutritious meals Monday through Friday at Clermont, Elm Grove and the First Baptist Church in Buckner. Breakfast and lunch will be provided on July 1, 2, and 3, as well as July 8 through August 2. Breakfast will be served 8-9 a.m. and lunch will be dished out from noon to 1 p.m. Kids 18 and younger eat for free. Adult breakfasts are $1.95 and lunches are $2.70. Sunday, July 7
The Hughesville FFA Chapter is holding their 2nd Annual Antique and Classic Tractor Pull on Sunday, July 7 beginning at 11 a.m. at Hughesville City Park. The event features concessions, raffles, and a 50/50 drawing, in addition to the tractor pull. Admission is free and the cost per pull is $10.00. Monday, July 8
The Carroll County Area YMCA will be having a Tennis Clinic on Monday, July 8 to Thursday, July 11.  Children will be split up into groups at the Carrollton tennis courts. 6-9-year-olds will be at 9-9:50 am, 10-14-year-olds 10-10:50 am and High School students will have a clinic from 11-11:50 am. Participants need to bring their own equipment, none will be provided.  The cost is $25 per participant.
Green Hills Community Action Agency Women’s Health Services will be having a clinic at the Carroll County Health Department on Monday, July 8, from 10 a.m.-noon and 1:30-5 p.m. The Health Department is located at 5 North Ely in Carrollton. For an appointment, call 660-542-3247.
Friday, July 12
The 4th annual Lexington All-Sports Booster Club 4-Man Scramble Golf Tournament is being held on Friday, July 12th. The event will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Shirkey Golf Club in Richmond. Saturday, July 13
Pershing Health System will hold free wellness exams for students living within the Linn County School Districts. The clinic is July 13, July 27, August 10, and August 24 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. It is available for children from age three to high school seniors. The exams will be offered at the Applegate Medical Group Office (125 E. Lockling in Brookfield).

The Chilhowee Baptist Church will have its Vacation Bible School will be Friday, July 19 through Sunday, July 21. The Elks Lodge in Lexington will have it’s 2nd Annual Rubber Duck Race on Saturday, July 20.  A taco salad lunch will be from noon to 1 p.m.  The race will immediately follow. The cost to adopt a duck is $5. Lunch is $5.  For more information email the lodge.

All kids will have an equal amount of playing time, regardless of ability. The early bird deadline is August 12. The cost is $25 for YMCA members and $30 for all others.  After August 12th, YMCA members will pay $30 and all others will pay $35.

The Chillicothe United Methodist Church is having it first annual “Choco and Chalk Walk Festival” on Saturday, August 31 from 10-6 p.m. All proceeds will go toward sponsoring a bed at SALT and purchasing beds for children in the community. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children.  Kids three and under are free.


September:
Friday, September 27
The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Johnson County and Warrensburg Main Street Inc. is hosting the first annual Burg Fest on September 27, 28, and 29 in downtown Warrensburg. The 3-day outdoor festival features live music, children’s activities, Classic Car Show and Shine, a BBQ cook off, and craft and informational booths. The event is free to attend. (tfn) The Hale City Lodge, in cooperation with the Bosworth, Hale, and Tina-Avalon Elementary Schools is sponsoring a literacy program for grades three through five. Students who fill out the proper paperwork will receive one entry for every eight books read in a drawing for a new bike and helmet. One drawing for each school will be held in the spring of 2013.

The County Service Center, previously located near the rear of the building at 1506 Oklahoma Ave in Trenton, can now be accessed via the front door, which faces Trenton High School. The Grundy County Public Housing Authority (also known as Section 8) can now be more easily accessed by visiting the fourth floor down on the side of the Oklahoma Ave headquarters. (tfn) Green Hills Community Action Agency has a new location for its Chillicothe Adult Education and Literacy Classes. AEL classes are held at 511 Elm Street in Chillicothe. (tfn) Community leaders in Odessa are looking for area residents to join the Whiteman Air Force Base Community Council. The Base community Council consists of more than 350 people representing 18 communities from Columbia to Kansas City and meets monthly. Each community is assigned a liaison squadron from Whiteman, and members of that unit participate in a wide range of events with their community partner. The BCC also works closely with the base to plan special events such as the annual open house and air show. An application has been made available on their website (www.ghcaa.org) for those interested in reserving a spot at the garden in Grundy County or receiving seeds as a part of the program.
