CAMERON, Mo. —┬áPrison officials say the damage is extensive after a riot at the Crossroads Correctional Center in Cameron on Saturday.

The incident started with a sit down protest by inmates, frustrated by understaffing at the facility.

Approximately 209 prisoners refused to leave the dining area around 8:10 p.m. Saturday night. According to reports, after a short time 131 inmates relented and were escorted away from the building.

The remaining 78 inmates allegedly extensively damaged furnishings and equipment at the facility before the Highway Patrol was able to negotiate a settlement around 2:00 a.m. Sunday.

Staff from across the state have been assigned to the facility to clean and repair damage to the facility. Prison officials do not yet know the total cost of the damage to the facility.

KMZU News has reached out to a warden at the jail, however did not immediately receive a response. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
