MISSOURI –¬†The First Ladies Pie Contest is coming up in August. Missouri’s First Lady Georganne Nixon will be hosting the pie contest at the 2015 Missouri State Fair. “This is a great opportunity for people who love to bake to develop some special recipe or share a special family recipe they have,” says Sarah Alsager, Public Information Officer for the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

Alsager says, “It really has been something that the First Lady has really been pleased to offer each year. She mentions that one of her fondest memories is the smell of a hot apple pie coming from her mother’s kitchen. Her hope is that this pie contest will help others relive some of those memories they might have from their mother’s or grandmother’s kitchens baking a pie.”

The competition is divided into two categories: Soft pies and fruit pies. Each category will have first, second, and third place winners. Best of show will be awarded to one of the first place winners. The winners will be awarded cash prizes and recognized during a ceremony in the Home Economics Building following the contest.

“We encourage everyone to take the opportunity to come to Sedalia for the State Fair every year and if you’re interested in baking we’d love to have you enter into the First Lady’s Pie Contest,” says Alsager.

This event will be held on August 20th at 10 a.m., in the Home Economics Building on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. The blueberry-pieentry form for the First Lady’s Pie Contest is available at the Missouri State Fair Website. Entry forms can be found under the competitions tab. Pies must be baked at home and delivered to the fairgrounds on the day of the competition. All pies must be baked from original recipes, and the crust and filling must be homemade.¬†Baker’s can only submit one pie into the contest. The deadline to enter a pie into the competition is August 1st.
