Anyone interested in mentoring young people should visit the open house at the Fort Osage School District Tuesday evening (Jan. 29). Director of Public Relations Stephanie Smith says information about the Youth Friends Mentoring Program will be available.

“It’s just an opportuinty for those who might be interested in being a mentor to kids to to come in and learn a little bit about the options that are available have some refreshments and even talk with some of the current volunteers about their experience and what their able to do for the schoold district.”

Smith says child-adult mentorship serves an important role in the education process.

We’ve been able to see kids increase in attendance, increase in grades, mastering of certain concepts.  For our older kids the mentors have been instrumental in helping to encourage them to be able to apply for college and choose some different career paths and interests that maybe they hadn’t thought about before.”

The event will be held at 6 in the Gragg Administration Center in Independence.
