The kick-off event for an effort in Odessa to build a new public library is scheduled for later this week. Click to hear KMZU’s Kristie Cross talk to spokesperson Brenda Oliver:
Those attending will hear from former Royals player Frank White and have the chance to speak with him directly. “He will talk to us about his new book that was recently published, as well as the importance of supporting the youth in our community,” said Oliver,” We will have not only a meet and greet with Frank, but also special one-on-one time with major contributors of $1,000 or more. They will meet with him personally in a private area.”
Oliver explained why the current Odessa library is in need of replacement. “This facility is part of the Trails Regional Library District, but ours is the oldest building left in the district,” said Oliver,” It’s operating out of a building that was a car dealership from the 1920’s. It’s just reached the point where we are in desperate need of a new library for the community.”
The total cost of the project will be split between the district and the city equally. ” This new building will cost $2 million,” said Oliver,” The tax district of the Trails Regional Library will be providing $1 million of that and we plan to raise the other half locally.”
Once completed, the new facility is expected to be double the size of the building they inhabit now. According to fundraisers, they hope to rebuild at the same site. “The current location is so close to downtown and it has a large enough lot to have good parking and some landscaping, so we plan to tear down that building and construct the new state of the art, energy efficient building right on the same site,” said Oliver,” So, we will stay in downtown Odessa and still be part of the heart of the community.”
Friday’s “First Pitch” event will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Brothers Auction facility located at 1800 West Old Highway 40 in Odessa.
