Missouri State Fair Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Steer Announced
(SEDALIA, Mo.) – Kayla Morrow, daughter of Kevin and Twila Morrow, is the exhibitor of the 2013 Grand Champion Steer at the Missouri State Fair. Kayla is a member of the Nevada FFA Chapter in Nevada. Her prize-winning Crossbred Steer weighed 1,310 pounds.
The Reserve Grand Champion Steer honor went to Mackenzie Mawson, daughter of Rodney and Kay Mawson. Her Crossbred steer weighed 1,315 pounds. Mackenzie is a member of the Archie Achievers 4-H Club in Archie.
On Aug. 17, both Morrow and Mawson will sell their steers in two of 12 lots offered in the Youth in Agriculture (YIA) Sale of Champions. Proceeds from the annual sale benefit both the winning exhibitors and the Missouri State Fair YIA Scholarship Program.
Through the generous support of YIA sponsors, the Missouri State Fair is able to award scholarships to Missouri youth pursuing a degree in an agriculture-related field. Last year, thirty-six $1,000 scholarships and one supreme $2,500 scholarship were awarded to youth across Missouri. Since 1992, 436 Missouri youth have received $361,000 in scholarships.
“The success of the Sale is credited to the support from Missouri Youth in Agriculture sponsors,” said Wayne Yokley, Chairman of the YIA Committee, and Superintendent of the Sale of Champions. “Their donations help ensure we are able to continue supporting our young people as they grow in agriculture and pursue higher education.”
