Police said one person died after a car chase and a crash that included gunfire east of downtown Kansas City.

Investigators said the occupants of one car were trying to get away from people in another vehicle who were shooting at them with an AK-47.

The fleeing vehicle crashed and overturned near 13th Street and Virginia Avenue.

Police said one of the people in the fleeing car died. That victim also had gunshot wounds, but police said they didn’t know whether the victim died from the shooting or the crash.

Police said they’re investigating a crime scene that covers a two-block area. They said there are dozens of shells from the shooting on the ground.

Investigators have not released the name of the person who died
