Press Release from the Missouri Department of Transportation

ST. JOSEPH, MO – The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that the Chariton County MO 11 bridge closure has been set for Monday, August 27. The BNSF Railroad bridge located five miles north of Mendon was set to close earlier in the month but was delayed when migratory birds were discovered on the bridge structure.

Representatives from the U.S. Fish & Wild have been monitoring this area and are hopeful that construction can begin next week. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act protects these migratory swallows and their nests. MoDOT has coordinated with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to conduct seasonal construction efforts which will not directly affect the nesting activities of migratory birds.

This project is being completed under the Missouri Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program. This is the final bridge to be completed in the Northwest District. Upon completion of the MO 11 bridge 190 bridges will be completed in Northwest Missouri. For a complete list of bridges included in the Safe & Sound Program in Northwest Missouri visit the following web site: www.modot.mo.gov/northwest/safeandsound/index2.htm
