The Championship game for the Class 3 District 14 Tournament was held Saturday evening at Lafayette County C-1 High School with the Huskers taking on the Knob Noster Panthers. Both teams had games in the tournament that were double digit wins and they also faced a team that took it down to the wire.
Lafayette County has faced Knob Noster 4 times now in the 2012-13 season and suffered their only loss at the hands of the Panthers, so this contest was expected to be another close one.
After the first few minutes of play that looked to be the case as both teams were showing signs of nerves making rushed passes, rushing down court and a myriad of mistakes that kept the score close in the first part of the opening period. At the end of one, the Huskers had built a 12-8 lead and it looked like it would be a close one into the half. The Huskers though calmed themselves and were able to apply pressure to the Panthers and keep them on their heels leading to a 28-18 halftime sorer in favor of Higginsville.
The second half would see more of the same as the Panthers big man at the post, David Barton found himself in foul trouble early and had to sit for several precious minutes of play. This allowed the Huskers to utilize Brett Nolte to devastating effect at the post. Nolte would go on to lead the Huskers in scoring with 18 on the night. By the last minute Knob Noster knew they were done for, but still played out the clock to fall 54-37.
The Panthers were led in scoring by Brett Marsh who was held to a tournament low 12 points with the nearest contributor, Hayden Anderson who put up 7.
The Huskers were also led by Tyrell Thirkield who put up 16 and holds the Lafayette County High School career point’s record with 1835. Mark Fine put up 8 points in the win as well.
