Luna said the idea stemmed from her love of animals and desire to help her community.  “I just finished my latest fundraiser which was penny wars and I raised $874 that I will give for sponsorship to the animal shelter,”said Luna,” I also did a dog and cat food fundraiser drive and we raised over $3,000 in that with food, toys, and supplies.”

According to the Fort Osage senior, the project was challenging, but worth the effort.  “I feel like this has been a huge success,” said Luna,” I like to set goals for myself and high standards.  Knowing that I actually got this done and that’s it’s helping the community makes me feel proud.”

Luna will make a presentation of $850 to shelter representatives Thursday morning to reduce adoption fees at the facility.

Press Release:

Heather Luna, Fort Osage High School and Fort Osage Career and Technology Center student, wanted to make a difference for animals in Independence.  Partnering with the Independence Animal Shelter, she was able to raise $850 to help reduce the adoption fee for those who wish to adopt a pet from the shelter.

In the fall of 2012, Luna and fellow Fort Osage High School student, Kassadee Gricher, began a DECA project over animal abuse.  With help from students at Fire Prairie Middle School and Osage Trail Middle School, they were able to collect and donate 455 items to the Independence Animal Shelter.  The items consisted of food, toys, treats, bowls, leashes, and more.

Ms. Jennifer Polston, representative from the Independence Animal Shelter, will come to the Fort Osage Career and Technology Center for an official presentation of the monies raised.   The presentation will take place on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 10:00 a.m.
