A Linn County resident recently placed at the Junior Olympic National Pistol Championships in Colorado. Click to hear KMZU’s Sarah Scott speak with Anthony McCollum:
McCollum said he did not expect to win first in his age range and seventh overall. “I started shooting when I was eight, in 4H. And I’ve only been shooting pistols for three years now,” said McCollum, “I practice a lot. In the summer I will practice every day, and in the winter I just practice whenever I can.”
A gold medal at the State Championships in January qualified him to attend nationals this year.
McCollum hopes to return next year and place in the top two overall, which would earn him a spot on the National Junior Team. If he achieves this goal, he would be assigned a personal coach he would live at the Olympic training center in Colorado.
