Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Shooting Team

Biography from Adapt and Overcome

John served nearly 23 years of active duty service in the United States Marine Corps. He was enlisted for the first 11 years attaining the rank of SSgt. and served the last 12 years as an Officer retiring as a Major in December 2008. His last duty assignment was in Kansas City, MO as the Deputy Director, Marine Corps Total Force Systems, HQMC.

John has been coaching shooters for over 25+ years He first began competitive shooting in 1987 at the Intramural Shooting Championships followed by the Eastern Division Matches held annually at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Later that year, John became a Primary Marksmanship Instructor with the Marine Corps. John has lead shooting teams in participating in 11 Marine Corps Division Matches, having won the Wharton Team Trophy on two separate occasions. While attending the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, John served as the OIC, Base Shooting Team winning both Rifle and Pistol Team Championships at the Pacific Fleet Championships held annually at Camp Pendleton, CA. John is a Marine Corps Distinguished Rifleman as well as a Presidents Hundred recipient. Since 2010, John also has served as the Head Coach, Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Shooting Team haven won 21 out 24 medals for the last two years in a row at the Warrior Games. John regularly participates in local, state, regional, and national level shooting competitions.

Operations: Was with the 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit and participated in Operation Sharp Edge, Monrovia, Liberia.

Awards: Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal (2d Award), Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (3d Award), Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, and Humanitarian Service Medal

Education: Bachelor’s Business Administration – Finance, Masters Business Administration, Masters Science – Information Systems.

Since 2008, John has served in several capacities to include Vice President of Operations for a national manufacturing company as well as the Chief Executive Officer for Iron County Hospital in Pilot Knob, MO, where John retired from in May 2012 in order to devote more of his time to helping veterans.

Affiliations: Life Member NRA, Life Member MOAA, Life Member DAV, VFW, Marine Mustang Association, Marine Corps League, Marine Corps Distinguished Shooters Association, Fleet Reserve Association.

John now lives in Kingsville, Missouri with his wife Katherine and their four children; Jernigan, Kristen, Morgan, and Jada.
