INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill will be in Independence today for the latest in a series of town halls across Missouri over the past year.

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill

McCaskill will host the listening event at Truman Memorial Building, a namesake of her self-described favorite president, Harry S. Truman.

“There is no way Washington will work for Missouri, unless Missourians’ voices are being heard — and that’s why it’s so important that I be in every corner of our state, listening and learning,” McCaskill said in a release announcing the town hall.

McCaskill proudly proclaims that during her tenure as Senator, she has hosted more town halls than “the rest of Missouri’s Congressional delegation combined.”

It is true that McCaskill has been consistent in hosting town hall events across Missouri, appearing most recently in communities across the KMZU listening area, including Chillicothe. The Senator, who is the Ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Service Committee, is running for reelection in 2018. Current Republican Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley announced his intention to run for McCaskill’s seat Monday.

Senator McCaskill took the announcement in stride. Her campaign manager, David Kirby, released a statement which read in part, “Since taking office in January, Josh Hawley has proven to be the worst type of politician. He broke his promise not to climb the political ladder . . . And he lied for nearly two months about whether he was running for Senate.”

The 2018 race is on. Hold on to your hats, folks.
