Missouri Woman in Agriculture Entries Being Accepted

Entries for the 2nd annual Missouri Woman in Agriculture Contests are being accepted until July 7th.

Women 18-30 years old are eligible for the Missouri Woman in Agriculture Rising Star Award and those ladies 31 and older are eligible for the Missouri Woman in Agriculture Award.

“I think that a lot of times in the course of the day to day business in agriculture that the woman is taking care of a lot of things and the guy is kind of the face of it sometimes, and we just thought that we needed to make a concerted effort one time to put the spot light on these folks that are doing their lion’s share of the work also, “said Missouri State Fair Director, Mark Wolfe. “The Woman in Agriculture Contest kind of came out of that and we are going to celebrate the second Thursday of the Fair again this year.”

There will be one winner in each of the two age groups that will receive a plaque and win $1,000 to be donated to a non-profit, agriculture-related cause of her choice from Monsanto.  This year the runner-up in each age division will also receive a plaque and a certificate of acknowledgement for all entrants.

There are several factors that will go into selecting the honorees such as leadership roles in Missouri agriculture, endeavors to preserve the industry, and examples of Fair participation.

This year’s winners will be honored August 14th at the 2014 Missouri State Fair, themed, Harvest the Fun! being held  August 7-17, 2014. Also this day there will be several special promotions that focus on women will be offered including free gate admission for all women, and a free showcase called Missouri Travel Council Celebrating Women, to be held in the Lowell Mohler Assembly Hall. The concert in the Pepsi Grandstand that day will be An Evening with MercyMe.

Brenda Black was last year’s winner of the Missouri Woman in Agriculture award and Missouri Cattle Women’s Upper Class Scholarship fund.

The 2013 Missouri Woman in Agriculture Rising Star Award when to Kellar Nelson who chose to have her donation go to Boone County 4-H Programs.
