A new attempt to scam money over the phone has popped up in Saline County recently. Click to hear KMZU’s Sarah Scott speak with Sheriff Wally George:
The latest wave of calls involves people pretending to be a friend of a family member experiencing legal trouble in another country.
“Sometimes the victim will say, you know, ‘Are you talking about David?’ or ‘Are you talking about Steve?’ or they’ll name some name in their family, and, man, that’s all this scammer needs,” said George.
George added that these scams are very frustrating because it is nearly impossible to find the scammers, and even if they are found they usually can’t be prosecuted because they are in another country.
Anyone who receives a phone call like this is encouraged to immediately hang up and contact the Saline County Sheriff’s Department.
Press Release from the Saline County Sheriff’s Office
Be advised my office is receiving numerous calls from our citizens informing us that they are receiving telephone calls from a person who states that they are a friend of the family, and that their son, brother, nephew, grandson, or in other words a member of their family is in jail in Mexico and needs money to get out of jail.
The victim will says something like “Are you talking about “David” or “Steve”, giving the caller a name which the caller picks up on and really attempts to “work” the victim into sending money to him so he can use it to get “whoever” out of jail.
Bottom line, anybody who calls you wanting to send money to get a family member out of jail is simply “A low life piece of crap scam artist” who is calling from someplace that is not even in the United States attempting to manipulate you into sending you money.
If you receive one of these calls, tell him or her to go get a life and hang up on them.
I would appreciate knowing about anymore calls received in Saline County so I can keep the Attorney Generals Office notified of the out of country scam artist.
