NEWSMAKER– Upcoming Lions All-Star game featuring top gridiron talent in the state

CARROLLTON, Mo.- The 41st Annual Missouri Lions All-Star Football game is taking place this weekend in Warrensburg, Mo., and features some of the top athletes from across the state.

The event is taking place Saturday, July 22, 2017, pre-game festivities begin at 6:30 p.m., with kick-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Warrensburg High School Tiger’s football field. The game is divided into two teams including a Blue and Gold team. Heading this year’s Blue team will be Coach Devin Johnson out of Osage High School, and the Gold Team will be piloted by local Penney High standout Coach Caleb Obert.

Per tradition, the players and coaches will arrive at UCM today, July 18, 2017. The week will be spent getting acquainted learning plays and two-a-day practice sessions. A banquet to honor the players will take place Friday evening, July 21, 2017, with Corby Jones, former Mizzou quarterback, as the keynote speaker.

The annual event was created in order to benefit Saving Sight, formerly known as the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation and has raised over $200,000 for the statewide project. Lion Gary Curtis, Athletic Committee Chairperson, said net proceeds last year totaled about $8,500.

The Penney High Hornets are nicely represented at this year’s all-star game. Three of Penney’s top former gridiron stars will join Coach Obert this week for the annual contest. Also on this year’s Gold Team are local standouts, Ethan Bohannan (Chilhowee High School), Adrean Eskew (Lawson High School), Spencer Whitt (Lafayette Co. High School), Austin Kemp (Oak Grove), and Chris Schlotzhauer (Lafayette Co. High School).

This year’s Blue Team is set to make some noise as a number of them were represented on this past season’s KMZU 2017 Football Dream Team. Cole Camp standouts Austin Berendzen and Kendrick Logan will be in attendance along with Marceline Tiger alums D.J Gerhart and Jordan Elam. Coach Barkley’s Minutemen of Lexington is sending two players; Trey Kaullen former ILB and Nolan Harris an OL.

Tickets for the game will be available at the gate on game day.
