The Grain Valley Eagles traveled to Odessa Friday night for the final game of the regular season of high school football. Odessa was celebrating senior night and a large crowd of Bulldogs fans were in attendance.

Grain Valley received the opening kick-off and proceeded to have an 80 yard drive to go up 6-0 on a 1 yard run from Travis DeLozier. The point after failed and the score remained 6-0.

Odessa wasted no time, nor did they need to put the offense on the field as Senior Brandon Hall took the kick off back 93 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good and Grain Valley held their only lead of the night for a total of 12 seconds. Odessa followed that up with 2 more touchdowns; a 50 yard pass by JW McGraw to Calieb Bennent and a 64 yard scramble by senior running back Evan Young. That put Odessa up 20-6 with 9 minutes left to go in the half. Grain Valley answered with two touchdowns on the back of Delozier, who ran one in from the 4 and another from the 2. The second point after attempt was blocked by Jake Bartow of the Bulldogs and the score was 20-19 in favor of Odessa. Then after a long methodical drive, the Bulldogs scored again on a 15 yard TD strike by McGraw to Trevor Plafcan. The extra point was good and Odessa went into half time with a 28-19 lead.

The opening drive by Odessa in the second half was stuffed by Grain Valley and it was back and forth as both offenses moved the ball but penalties and interceptions thrown by both QBs lead to a scoreless 3rd. Grain Valley was able to pull within two on a 15 yard pass from Dominick McCoubrie to Caleb McKay and with 8:02 left to go Odessa was hanging on to a 28-26 lead. However the Bulldogs took advantage of costly penalties by the Eagles and put up two more TD’s in the last 5 minutes of the game to go on to a 42-26 victory.

Grain Valley finishes the regular season at 2-7 and Odessa improved to 4-5. Both teams will now have to wait till Saturday night when MSHSAA determines seeding for the first week of divisional tournament play.
