Odessa Man Faces Assault and Murder Charges

At first it was a charge of felony assault levied against an Odessa man for beating his Uncle. That man now faces the additional charge of second degree murder.

44-year-old Joe Courtway assaulted his uncle, by marriage, back in late October, fracturing bones around his eye. 56-year-old Paul Schwartze was rushed to the Lafayette Regional Health Center in Lexington where he died a few weeks later.

According to reports the incident happened on the victim’s property just east-southeast of Odessa during an argument over hunting privileges.

Courtway is being held on a $150,000 bond and is due in Lafayette County court for a preliminary hearing February 5th.
