McKenzie said he is comfortable with the county’s level of preparedness should disaster strike.  “We have a very decent volunteer organization group.  Everyone wants to participate and help,” said McKenzie, “And the thing is, whenever we would have something too terribly big, everyone’s so community-minded around here that everybody would be willing to take care of the ones that need taking care of.”

McKenzie helped secure funding form an Emergency Management Performance Grant and organized Chariton County’s first full-scale exercise of a natural disaster during his first year on the job.
