A fire broke out at the senior center in Cairo during the overnight hours. Click to hear KMZU’s Kristie Cross talk to Fire Chief Harold Muehe:
Crews responded to the scene shortly before one a.m. “We had four apartment units in the senior citizens housing catch fire,” said Muehe, “On arrival, we had flames through the roof. There were residents in all four units and we were able to get them all out safely. We brought the fire under control by about 3:20 this morning.”
The chief said the weather conditions played a role in the efforts. “We had four departments here and about 30 volunteers,” said Mehe, “It was extremely cold. We had a lot of problems with the equipment freezing up, but we did the best we could.”
No injuries were reported and all residents have been placed with family or friends for the time being.
According to Muehe, the building is a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
