Program Expands Food Stamp Access

St. Joseph, Mo.Second Harvest Community Food Bank is helping eligible individuals enroll into the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) through our new program, Close the Gap. Through this program we have hired two full-time Food Security Coordinators. Their role will be to help navigate individuals through the application process. One coordinator will handle applications from Andrew and Buchanan counties while the other will handle all of our remaining out-counties including Atchison, Caldwell, Clinton, Daviess, DeKalb, Gentry, Grundy, Harrison, Holt, Livingston, Mercer, Nodaway, Worth.

Our target is to complete 500 applications through this program generating nearly 517,000 meals, having an estimated total economic impact of $2.3 million. To date we have completed 65 applications with an average benefit of $261.00. The local economic impact generated in our region is $289,000 with 67,000 meals being attributed to Close the Gap.
