A Richmond man has been charged in connection to an incident that occurred Tuesday evening at a home in the 300 block of West Dauxville Drive. According to a report from the Richmond Police Department, Michael Scott James Dorton, 21, allegedly struck his mother in the head with a sledge hammer. The victim was transported to a Kansas City area hospital.
Dorton fled the scene, which prompted police to issue a state wide alert in an effort to locate him. He was apprehended Thursday in Merriam, Kansas where he now awaits an extradition hearing. Ray County court documents indicate Dorton is facing one count each of assault and armed criminal action.

On January 15th, 2012 at 5:44 p.m. officers from the Richmond Police Department along with Richmond Fire and Ray County Ambulance were sent to a residence on West Dauxville Drive in reference to a female bleeding from the head with an unknown head injury.
The victim’s 21 year old son made the 911 call and told reporting officers he was uncertain what caused the injuries to his mother. The victim was transported to an area hospital where a further inspection of her head showed the victim was possibly struck by a blunt force object, and the victim was transported to a Kansas City Area hospital for further treatment.
When officers went back to speak with the 21 year old son further he had left the residence and information was received he was possibly fleeing the state in his parent’s stolen car. At that point a state wide alert was issued in an attempt to locate the 21 year old. A criminal investigation was initiated and the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control responded to assist in processing the scene on West Dauxville.
The investigation lead officers to believe the 21 year old son struck his mother in the head with a sledge hammer and on 01-17-2012 the Ray County Prosecutor’s office charged Michael Scott James Dorton, 21, of Richmond with Felony Assault in the First Degree – Serious Physical Injury and Armed Criminal Action. Bond on the warrant was set at $750,000.00 cash only.
Also on 01-17-2012 detectives from the Richmond Police Department located Dorton possibly at a location in Kansas. At approximately 7:53 p.m. the Merriam, Kansas Police Department arrested Dorton and recovered the vehicle. Richmond detectives responded to the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff’s Office where Dorton was interviewed in reference to this case.
Dorton is currently being held in the Johnson County, Kansas Jail awaiting his appearance in a Kansas court to waive extradition back to Missouri.
