A first-degree murder charge against a Sedalia man was dropped after a Boone County prosecutor accepted his insanity plea.  Rudy Perez, 33, was charged in the Feb. 1 fatal beating of Robert Hill, 78, at Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia.  Hill was a hospital patient.  Perez was admitted to the hospital on a 96-hour involuntary commitment, according to court records.

Boone County Circuit Judge Gary Oxenhandler sentenced Perez to a maximum security mental facility at Fulton State Hospital on Monday.  The decisions came after a second doctor diagnosed Perez with schizophrenia. Prosecutor Dan Knight said Perez had a history of hallucinations and paranoid delusions dating back to 1999.
