The 12-year-old boy who died after accidentally shooting himself at his home on Friday has been identified. Steven Curtis died Saturday at a Kansas City area hospital. Click to hear KMZU’s Kristie Cross talk to Superintendent Brent Skinner:
According to the Superintendent, Curtis has been a student in the district since preschool. “Steven was a typical seventh grade boy,” said Skinner,” He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He played junior high football. He was an all around good kid who always seemed to be happy. I’ve said this before and I would say it to him directly that he kinda had an ornery grin on his face most of the time. He was just a nice kid that came from a good family.”
Skinner said the small community is banding together to handle the tragedy. “We had a staff meeting this morning with the entire staff to talk to them about the incident, as well as the plan for the day,” said Skinner,” We had additional counselors come in. We had four pastors and a total of three additional school counselors here, so we’ve had a good response. The community has pulled together behind this family and this set of circumstances.
According to the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, the young boy was with his two teenage siblings and friend when he accidentally shot himself. The shooting remains under investigation.
