Rookies, quarterbacks and select veterans have already been practicing this week. Tyler Bray and Rickey Stanzi split QB duties on Thursday as Alex Smith and Chase Daniel were given the day off.

(St. Joseph, MO) — As the Chiefs get set to begin camp in earnest today, one player is out of work. KC has released wide receiver Mardy Gilyard. The 26-year-old was originally selected by the Rams in the fourth round of the 2010 draft. He has eight career receptions for 78 yards with the Rams, Jets and Eagles.

(St. Joseph, MO) — Former KU football players Bradley McDougald and Toben Opurum say head coach Charlie Weis is right in calling last year’s team “a pile of crap.” The current Chiefs rookies say the description is accurate after the Jayhawks went 1-and-11 last year. Neither viewed Weis’ comment as disrespectful.

(Kansas City, MO) — Alex Gordon and David Lough [[ Loh ]] each drove in two runs as the Royals beat the Orioles 7-1 at Kauffman Stadium. Billy Butler added a home run for KC, which took three-of-four in the series. Jeremy Guthrie pitched six innings of one-run ball for his 10th win. KC is now 48-and-51.

(Chicago, IL) — The Royals open a nine-game road trip tonight in Chicago. KC plays the White Sox in the first of three at U.S. Cellular field, with James Shields opposing Chicago’s Jose Quintana. The Royals are 4-and-5 against the White Sox this season. KC also plays the Twins and Mets before returning home.

(Kansas City, MO) — George Brett’s stint as interim hitting coach for the Royals is over. The Hall of Famer is stepping down after nearly two months to return to his role as vice president of baseball operations. Brett took over as hitting coach on May 30th when Jack Maloof and Andre David were reassigned.

(St. Louis, MO) — Lance Lynn fired seven strong innings as the Cardinals completed a three-game sweep of the Phillies with a 3-1 win at Busch Stadium. Lynn struck out six while giving up just one run on five hits as he improved to 12-and-5. Edward Mujica closed it out for his 30th save. Jon Jay tripled in a run during a three-run third inning for the Redbirds, who are 5-and-1 since the All-Star break. Matt Carpenter and Matt Adams also plated a run each in the victory.

(Atlanta, GA) — The St. Louis Cardinals start an 11-game road trip tonight in Atlanta against the Braves. Adam Wainwright toes the rubber for St. Louis against Mike Minor in Game One of the three-game series. The Cards also play five games at Pittsburgh and three at Cincinnati.
