SEATTLE (AP) — Jason Vargas allowed one hit in eight innings of work to lead the Seattle Mariners past the Kansas City Royals 4-1 last night. Mike Carp and Dustin Ackley each drove in a pair of runs for the Mariners. Billy Butler provided Kansas City’s only offense with an RBI double in the fourth. The two teams play again tonight at 9:10.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – David Freese and Tony Cruz each drove in a pair of runs yesterday to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-4. Matt Holliday added a solo home run for the Cards. The Dodgers have lost three games in a row. The Red Birds and Cubs play today at 1:20

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have signed first-round pick Dontari Poe. The team announced the deal yesterday. Poe took part in the Chiefs’ entire off season program, despite failing to reach a deal with the team.

EARTH CITY, Mo. (AP) — The St. Louis Rams have opened their rookie training camp. The rookies will practice one more time today before the full team arrives on Sunday. Rookie cornerback Trumaine Johnson missed the first day of rookie camp after sleeping through his alarm and missing his flight Wednesday morning. Johnson arrived in town later that day.

(Undated) – The National Football League is launching what league officials call a comprehensive health program for former, current, and future players. Commissioner Roger Goodell announced “NFL Total Wellness” in a letter to eleven-thousand current and former players, telling them that their health and wellness are top priorities. The program includes a new service called “NFL Life Line,” which is a free, confidential, and independent mental health phone line. It’s run by a third party and is available to players, coaches, staff, and family members.

The festivities are slated to start at 4 p.m. Eastern and will officially kick off 17 days of competition. Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle is the mastermind behind the 42-million-dollar Opening Ceremony theme “Isles of Wonder.” Beatles legend Paul McCartney is rumored to be ending the show with a giant sing-along.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — NASCAR officials are mulling the elimination of the top-35 rule to put the focus back on speed in qualifying. Since 2005, the top 35 in points have been guaranteed provisional starting spots at the next race, which has sometimes eliminated faster cars from starting the race. The rule was designed to make sure full-time teams with big-name drivers and big sponsors did not miss the race, but that could change next season.
