Elliot Johnson hit a three-run homer last night as the Kansas City Royals routed the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1. Eric Hosmer also went deep and Miguel Tejada added an RBI double for the Royals. Kansas City set a franchise record by holding an opponent to three runs or fewer in a 12th straight game.

Adam Wainwright became the major leagues’ first 10-game winner after leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-1 win over the New York Mets yesterday. Wainwright retired his first 11 batters and finished with six strikeouts. Matt Carpenter hit an RBI triple for the Cardinals.

Luke Donald was the leader when first round play was shut down at the US Open. He had completed 13 holes and stood 4-under. The leader in the clubhouse was Phil Mickelson, who shot an opening round 3-under-67.
