Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas homered Thursday night in the Kansas City Royals’ 6-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Jeremy Guthrie beat his former team after allowing two runs in six-plus innings. Chris Davis hit his 10th home run of the season for Baltimore.  The Royals return to Kauffman Stadium for a brief homestand against the New York Yankees. This three-game series will be the only time the Yankees play at Kauffman Stadium this season.

The St. Louis Cardinals begin a three-game series Friday night against the Colorado Rockies at Busch Stadium. The NL Central-leading Cardinals have won seven of their last eight games. The Rockies lost two of three games against the New York Yankees earlier in the week.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy had their best start ever in the Players Championship, but it wasn’t enough to catch a guy who had never played the TPC Sawgrass. Roberto Castro tied the course record with a 9-under 63, good for a three-shot edge over McIlroy and a four-shot advantage over Woods entering today’s second round.
