SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Caribbean Series MVP Luis Mendoza allowed one run in four innings yesterday to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 7-5 spring win over the Texas Rangers. Xavier Nady and Brett Hayes hit RBI singles late in the game to put the Royals on top. Salvador Perez went 3 for 3 with a double for Kansas City.
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self can reach career win No. 500 tonight at Iowa State. The No. 9 Jayhawks are 11-3 in the Big 12, tied for first place with rival Kansas State. Center Jeff Withey says Self has done a lot for the team and “if we can get that win for him, that means a lot to us and him.”
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Jimmie Johnson won his second Daytona 500 yesterday, racing past defending NASCAR champion Brad Keselowski on the final restart. Dale Earnhardt Jr. made a last move to finish second, and Mark Martin came in third place. Danica Patrick became the first woman in history to lead laps in the Daytona 500, finishing in eighth place.
