University of Central Missouri senior left-handed pitcher Zach Davis was selected in the 25th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft on Saturday by the Houston Astros. Davis was pick No. 736.  Davis (Carrollton, Mo./Longview CC) becomes the 31st Mule to be drafted by a major league organization and will be the 56th to sign with a major league franchise, the fourth draft pick and fifth signee for recently retired head coach Tom Myers.  The Houston Astros are owned by former UCM All-American pitcher, Jim Crane.

James Shields kept making critical pitches to escape trouble as the Kansas City Royals squeaked out a 2-1 win over the Yankees yesterday. The Royals have won the last seven games that Shields has started. The Royals scored both of their runs off Hiroki Kuroda in the second inning.

Jaime Garcia and two relievers combined on a three-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-0 yesterday.
