Central Missouri fell behind early, and couldn’t dig out of the hole falling 4-1 to Southern Arkansas in the Central Regional. The Mules have been eliminated from the NCAA tournament. Minnesota State-Mankato won it all.
Senior Chelsea Thomas pitched a one-hitter to get No. 6-seeded Mizzou past Hofstra and into the NCAA Super Regionals with nine strikeouts in the 5-0 win on Sunday at University Field.Thomas did not allow a walk through her seven innings to improve to 24-4 in her final Tiger campaign. The win improved Mizzou’s overall record to 38-12, with Hofstra falling to 46-13 to conclude its 2013 season. The Tigers have advanced to the Super Regional round of the tournament for six consecutive seasons.
A second game of the day was forced after Hofstra took the initial contest by a score of 10-0 in five innings. Mizzou beat Hofstra Ace Olivia Galati in the second game.
Yoenis Cespedes homered in the eighth inning to give the Oakland Athletics a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals yesterday. Reliever Jerry Blevins pitched one scoreless inning to earn the victory, and Ryan Cook worked the ninth for his first save. Kansas City’s Alex Gordon matched a career high with four hits.
Jon Jay had an RBI double as part of a four-run fourth inning yesterday that lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Yadier Molina, David Freese and Pete Kozma also drove in runs in the fourth. Brewers starter Kyle Lohse gave up four runs and eight hits against his former team.
