NASCAR

Denny Hamlin is NASCAR’s hottest driver right now. Hamlin has the inside track for the No. 1 seed in the Chase for the Championship with his second straight victory, and fourth of his NASCAR Sprint Cup season.

Hamlin held off Jeff Gordon on a two-lap green-white-checkered flag finish to win the AdvoCare 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Hamlin also won last weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Hamlin leads the Sprint Cup victory parade with four, putting him in position to top the standings when the 12-drive Chase starts.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Rams claimed rookie running back Terrance Ganaway and defensive tackle Kellen Heard off waivers. The moves were made yesterday, one day after receiver Greg Salas was traded to New England and cornerback Jerome Murphy was released. Ganaway was waived by the New York Jets on Friday.

The NFL referees union says the league is engaged in a misinformation campaign following unsuccessful negotiations over the weekend.

The two sides failed to reach an agreement Saturday when they met for the third day in a row, and the league said it’s proceeding with replacement officials.

The NFL locked out the referees in early June, and hired replacements, whose work in exhibition games has been heavily criticized. On Sunday the league sent teams a memo saying it upped its offer to the union and thought it was close to a deal, but the union says there was no agreement.
