CHICAGO (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals were hitting the long ball at a historic pace yesterday at Wrigley Field. The Cardinals became the first team in eight years to hit a homer in each of the first five innings. They knocked off the rival Chicago Cubs 9-6 yesterday. Lance Lynn got his 13th win to tie him for the National League lead. Both teams will battle it out again today at 12:05.

SEATTLE (AP) — Jeremy Guthrie’s still winless as a Kansas City Royal. He gave up six runs and 11 hits yesterday in a 6-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners. John Jaso led the way with four RBIs, and Blake Beavan pitched well. Guthrie came to the Royals from the Colorado Rockies in a trade for Jonathan Sanchez. Guthrie’s now 0-2 in Kansas City and 3-11 combined. The four-game series continues today at 3:10.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — First the Los Angeles made the big splash in free agency by getting Albert Pujols. Now they’ve traded for arguably the most sought-after pitcher on the block. The Milwaukee Brewers traded former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke to the Brewers yesterday for rookie shortstop Jean Segura and two minor league pitchers. The 28-year-old drafted by the Kansas City Royals is a free agent after the season.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe was not on the field as the team opened training camp. Kansas City’s leader in receptions and receiving yards the past three years was given the franchise tag when he refused to sign the Chiefs’ tender. If he eventually comes in and plays this year, as the Chiefs expect, he will get about $9.5 million.

(London) – Although there have already been preliminary events in soccer and archery, today marks the first full day of Olympic competition. Nineteen sports will see action, including twelve gold medal events. Swimming highlights the day, with Americans Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte [[ LOCK-tee ]] squaring off in the men’s 400-meter individual medley. Gold medals will also be awarded in the men’s 400-meter freestyle, the women’s 400-meter individual medley and the women’s 4-by-100-meter freestyle. Golds in archery, cycling, fencing, judo, shooting and weightlifting will also be awarded.
