Luis Mendoza pitched six innings to win for the first time in six starts and Elliot Johnson had another big hit against his former team, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 7-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays last night. Mendoza (2-3) gave up two runs and seven hits and three Royals relievers pitched three hitless innings as the Royals held a 13th straight opponent to three runs or fewer. Mendoza last won May 13.
Rookie Jose Fernandez outpitched a rusty Jake Westbrook, and Miami Marlins beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4. Fernandez had a career-high 10 strikeouts in seven innings yesterday, and the Marlins spoiled Westbrook’s return from an elbow injury.

Second round play at the US Open was shut down by darkness yesterday. When play was called the lead was held by Billy Horschel and Phil Mickelson at 1-under-par. The second round got a late start because the first round had to be completed earlier in the day. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are four back at 3-over.
