Royals pitcher Danny Duffy (2-4) gave up five runs and nine hits over six innings in his fourth start since he began filling in for Bruce Chen, who has a sore back.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Todd Frazier hit a three-run homer off Shelby Miller, who had won his last six decisions, and Devin Mesoraco added a solo shot as the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Friday night and tightened the top of the NL Central. Cincinnati is 3-4 against St. Louis this season and trying to end a longstanding trend this weekend.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — John Force broke Heartland Park Topeka’s Funny Car time and speed records Friday in rain-shortened qualifying for the NHRA Kansas Nationals. The 65-year-old Force, the 16-time and defending Funny Car season champion, powered his Ford Mustang to a 4.021-second run at 318.84 mph. he won the season-opening Winternationals for his record 139th victory.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — First-round play Friday in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship was delayed three times for more than eight hours because of rain and finally suspended for the day. With half the field yet to start play at Prairie Dunes, Oregon topped the leaderboard at 3 under. The Ducks’ Zach Foushee was the individual leader at 3 under through six holes. The teams will play 54 holes of stroke play to qualify for the eight-team championship playoff, which will be conducted in a match-play format.
