O’FALLON, Mo. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a former minor-league baseball player from suburban St. Louis whose body was found in a creek. Police say 24-year-old Kent Gerst of O’Fallon, Mo., was reported missing Sunday afternoon; his body was found hours later in a creek in O’Fallon. Gerst was a 2006 draft pick of the Chicago White Sox who made it as high as Triple-A before being released. He later signed with the Gateway Grizzlies, an independent minor-league team in Sauget, Ill.

(Kansas City, MO) — Matt Ryan passed for 299 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a score to lead the Falcons in a 40-24 win over the Chiefs. Tony Gonzalez also found the end zone via the air for Atlanta. Gonzalez returned to KC for the first time since being traded to Atlanta before the 2009 season. He spent his first 12 NFL seasons with the Chiefs. Matt Cassel threw for 258 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions and also lost a fumble for the Chiefs. Cassel and Shaun Draughn also had rushing scores in the loss. The Chiefs take on Buffalo Sunday.

(Detroit, MI) – Kevin Smith hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford with ten seconds left in the game as the Lions walked away with a 27-23 season-opening win over the Rams. St. Louis had taken the lead with under two minutes to play. Cortland Finnegan took a 31-yard interception to the house and Sam Bradford added a 23-yard TD toss to Brandon Gibson for St. Louis. Bradford finished 17-of-25 for 198 yards with a touchdown in defeat. The Rams host the Redskins in their home-opener next Sunday.

UNDATED (AP) — There are two NFL games this evening. First up in Baltimore the Ravens are playing host to AFC North rival Cincinnati. A year ago the Ravens finished tied with Pittsburgh at 12-4 on top of the division, while the Bengals were 9-7.
The second game is in Oakland and has the Raiders playing host to the Chargers in an AFC West encounter. Both clubs finished 8-8 last season.

(Detroit, MI) – Rams tackle Rodger Saffold left yesterday’s 27-23 loss to the Lions on a stretcher. He was injured on Brandon Gibson’s 23-yard touchdown catch with just under 10 minutes to play. The team later announced Saffold had movement in his extremities. The 24-year-old is in his third season with St. Louis.

(Chicago, IL) — Mike Moustakas and Jeff Francoeur singled in runs in the top of the 10th inning and the Royals held on to beat the White Sox, 2-1. Gordon Beckham doubled home a run in the bottom half for Chicago, but Greg Holland struck out the final two hitters with men at second and third to hold on for his 13th save. Kelvin Herrera got the win for KC, which took two-of-three at The Cell. The Royals and Twins start a three-game set tomorrow.

(St. Louis, MO) – Allen Craig singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Cardinals a 5-4 win over the Brewers. Nori Aoki hit a two-out, two-run homer off Jason Motte in the top of the ninth to tie the game at four and force extra innings for Milwaukee. Matt Holliday and Carlos Beltran hit first-inning home runs for St. Louis, which salvaged the finale of the three-game series at Busch Stadium. Lance Lynn got the win. The Cards start a three-game set in San Diego tonight as Jaime Garcia takes the ball against Eric Stults.

(St. Louis, MO) – Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook will not make his next start. Westbrook has a sore oblique muscle and that he will not make his next scheduled appearance on Thursday in Los Angeles. Westbrook says the injury could keep him out for the remainder of the season, though manager Mike Matheny downplayed that notion.

(Columbia, MO) – Missouri had a one-point lead at halftime, but suffered a 41-20 setback to seventh-ranked Georgia in its SEC debut on Saturday. James Franklin threw for 269 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in the defeat. The Tigers host Arizona State on Saturday night.
