(Kansas City, MO) – Chris Parmelee hit a three-run homer and Joe Mauer added a grand slam as the Twins edged the Royals, 8-7, to sweep a doubleheader. Anthony Swarzak earned the win in relief while Glen Perkins notched his 10th save. Luke Hochevar gave up eight runs in one-and-two-thirds innings to suffer the loss for Kansas City. Salvador Perez went 4-for-5 with an RBI while Billy Butler had three hits and three runs in the loss. In the opener, Minnesota edged KC, 3-1. Cole De Vries tossed six-and-two-thirds innings one one-run ball to get the win while Perkins notched the save. Justin Morneau plated a pair in the victory. The Royals will gather themselves and face the Twins once more. Luis Mendoza gets the start for the Roayals, he’ll face Esmerling Vasquez in opposition; first pitch in Kansas City at 1:10 p.m.

(Washington, DC) – David Freese singled home Allen Craig in the top of the ninth as the Cardinals held off the Nationals, 10-9. Freese was 3-for-5 with a two-run home run in the win. Matt Holliday also had a two-run shot for St. Louis, which snapped a four-game slide. Mitchell Boggs earned the win in relief, while Jason Motte picked up his 32nd save. Adam LaRoche smacked a two-run homer and Danny Espinosa added a solo jack for Washington, which had won three straight. Drew Storen suffered the loss out of the bullpen. The Cardinals will send Jake Westbrook to the mound for the start. The Washington Nationals will put Stephen Strasburg out in opposition; frst pitch at Nationals Park at 12:35 p.m. Central time.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Marcus Murphy scored on punt returns of 72 and 70 yards in Missouri’s 62-10 season-opening rout of Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday night. Zaviar Gooden and Michael Sam fueled a lightning-fast start with early defensive touchdowns for the Tigers in Columbia. Kendial Lawrence ran for a 76-yard TD and totaled 121 yards on 10 carries for Mizzou.
