CLEVELAND (AP) — Michael Brantley hit a pair of solo homers last night as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-3. Justin Masterson earned the win after allowing two runs and striking out eight over six-plus innings. Eric Hosmer and David Lough each had three hits for the Royals.

(Kansas City, MO)  —  The Royals are off today before they open a five-game homestand tomorrow night at Kauffman Stadium.  They host the White Sox Friday in the first of a three-game set.  Jeremy Guthrie puts his 7-and-4 mark on the line for KC, while Chicago counters with Hector Santiago, who is 2-and-5.  At 34-and-36, KC is third in the AL Central, five games behind Detroit.

(Frisco, TX)  —  Sporting Kansas City returns to the pitch Saturday on the road at FC Dallas.  Sporting KC has been idle since a 1-0 loss to Orlando City in U.S. Open Cup play on June 12th.  SKC’s last MLS match was a 2-1 home loss to Montreal on June 1st.  Sporting is fifth in the East with 22 points at 6-5-and-4.  FC Dallas leads the West with 28 points at 8-3-and-4.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jake Westbrook pitched seven innings of two-hit ball last night to lead the St. Louis Cardinals past the Chicago Cubs 4-1. Yadier Molina hit a two-run homer and Allen Craig added an RBI single for the Cardinals. Cubs starter Edwin Jackson took the loss after giving up four runs in five-plus innings.

(St. Louis, MO)  —  The four-game series between the Cardinals and Cubs ends tonight.  St. Louis has a chance to win the series three games to one with a win.  It’s Lance Lynn getting the start for the Cards against Scott Feldman of the Cubs at 7:15 p.m. local time.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cardinals have agreed to terms with their top pick from the Major League Baseball draft earlier this month. Pitcher Marco Gonzales was taken 19th overall. Terms of the contract weren’t disclosed. He earned the 2012 West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year and was a Golden Spike finalist.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — University of Missouri-Kansas City athletics director Tim Hall is leaving for a job at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Hall has been the athletics director at UMKC since 2007. He previously served as the associate athletics director for development at Kent State University.

BOSTON (AP) — Brent Seabrook’s overtime goal lifted the Chicago Blackhawks to a 6-5 win over the Boston Bruins last night and evened the Stanley Cup finals at 2-2. Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Marcus Kruger each added a goal in the second period for the Blackhawks. Boston’s Johnny Boychuk netted the game-tying goal in the third period. Game 5 of the best-of-seven series is Saturday night.
