Oakland’s Yoenis Cespedes is in good company with Ken Griffey Jr. Cespedes beat Cincinnati’s Todd Frazier, 9-1, in the final round to win the Home Run Derby for the second straight year on Monday at Target Field. The A’s slugger became the first back-to-back winner since Griffey captured the 1998 and ’99 crowns for the Seattle Mariners.
Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez and St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright have been selected as the starting pitchers for Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Target Field. Hernandez, now a five-time All-Star, is 11-2 with a 2.12 ERA in 20 starts this season. He will be the second Mariners pitcher to start an All-Star Game following Randy Johnson, who did it twice in 1995 and ’97. Wainwright will be the first Cardinals All-Star starting pitcher since Chris Carpenter in 2005. An All-Star for the third time, Wainwright is 12-4 with a 1.83 ERA in 19 starts.
Tiger Woods has an early start Thursday at the 2014 British Open, while Phil Mickelson will begin defense of his title in the afternoon with Ernie Els and Bubba Watson alongside at Royal Liverpool. Woods will make his second start since returning from a three-month absence because of back surgery. He missed the cut a few weeks back at the Quicken Loans National on the PGA Tour.
