KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was chosen AFC offensive player of the year and Vikings running back Adrian Peterson the NFC’s top offensive player in voting for the 101 Awards.
A nationwide panel of 101 sportswriters and broadcasters who regularly cover the NFL vote on the awards, which will be handed out for the 43rd time on March 2 in Kansas City.
San Francisco linebacker Aldon Smith was the NFC’s top defensive player, and Seattle’s Pete Carroll the conference coach of the year. Houston’s J.J. Watt was the AFC’s best defensive player and Chuck Pagano and Bruce Arians of Indianapolis shared the AFC coaching honor.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — New Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid has hired former Chicago Bears assistant Dave Toub to direct special teams. Toub has spent the past nine seasons with the Bears. Reid also announced he’s retaining linebackers coach Gary Gibbs and defensive backs coach Emmitt Thomas.
HOUSTON (AP) — The University of Houston has chosen former Kansas City Chiefs assistant David Gibbs as defensive coordinator. Cougars coach Tony Levine announced the hiring of Gibbs yesterday. His last collegiate coaching job was in 2005 as defensive coordinator at Auburn.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have signed right-hander Kyle McClellan to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. McClellan pitched the last five seasons for St. Louis. The 28-year-old underwent surgery on his right elbow and shoulder last July.
