KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas and Kansas State are the favorites heading into the Big 12 tournament despite weekend losses. Both teams have an opening round bye and will play their first games tomorrow. Oklahoma faces Iowa State and Oklahoma State meets Baylor in other quarterfinal matchups.

(AP) – The University of Missouri-Kansas City has fired basketball coach Matt Brown after six seasons and with the program poised to leave the Summit League for the Western Athletic Conference. Brown was 64-122 with the ‘Roos, including an 8-24 record this season. He had just one winning season in Kansas City. Brown had one year left on his contract.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have officially announced their trade of quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs. A person familiar with the deal says the 49ers will receive the Chiefs’ second-round pick and a conditional choice in next year’s draft. Smith must still pass a physical.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Rams have reached a five-year deal with free agent tight end Jared Cook. The team says they outbid Miami for the 25-year-old Cook, who played for St. Louis coach Jeff Fisher in Tennessee. The Titans declined to place the franchise tag on Cook.
PHOENIX (AP) — Eric Sogard had a tiebreaking double in the fifth inning and the Oakland Athletics bullpen slowed the hot-hitting Kansas City Royals in a 6-3 victory yesterday. The Royals, who scored 30 runs in their previous two games, increased their lead to 3-0 in the fourth on run-scoring hits by Max Ramirez and Johnny Giavotella. Oakland tied it against Royals starter James Shields in the bottom half on an RBI double. Kansas City lost for just the second time in 16 spring training games.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – Rookie Jake Allen made 39 saves yesterday to lead the St. Louis Blues past the San Jose Sharks 4-2. Chris Stewart had two goals, and David Perron and Chris Porter also scored for the Blues. St. Louis defeated the Sharks for the second time in three nights.
