WASHINGTON (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals will send returning ace Chris Carpenter to the mound today to face the Washington Nationals in Game 3 of the NL division series. Carpenter has pitched only 17 innings all year because of surgery. The Nationals will counter with Edwin Jackson, who was a member of the World Series champion Cardinals last year.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia has been removed from the team’s playoff roster due to a strained rotator cuff and inflammation in his throwing shoulder. Manager Mike Matheny says Garcia will be replaced by rookie right-hander Shelby Miller. Garcia lasted just two innings in St. Louis’ 12-4 win Monday before leaving with a shoulder problem.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs waived Neiko Thorpe this week and re-signed offensive lineman Bryan Mattison. The Chiefs brought back Mattison to provide depth along the offensive line. Injured defensive back Jalil Brown is expected back at practice this week.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs fans have been cast in a negative spotlight. Earlier this week, offensive lineman Eric Winston laid into a small percentage of Chiefs fans who cheered when quarterback Matt Cassel suffered a concussion in Sunday’s loss to Baltimore. Winston called the cheering fans “sickening,” and his locker-room rant went viral.
