Sweet Springs FFA receives a Top Chapter Award
COLUMBIA, Mo., April 19, 2013 – Sweet Springs FFA placed 15th out of 331 chapters in the state, earning a Top Chapter Award at the 85th Missouri FFA Convention. Only 10 percent of state chapters receive a top chapter designation each year.
Chapter activity awards, sponsored by FCS Financial, are given to chapters achieving excellence in student, chapter and community development. Sweet Springs FFA Chapter advisors are Kristen Fenner, Dennis Dohrman and Brent Niemeyer.
The Sweet Springs FFA student development activities included competing in career development events, exhibiting swine at the Missouri Pork Expo and attending national convention.
Sweet Springs FFA activities in chapter development included hosting a barbecue and pool party at the local park. Other activities included volunteering for the community Gusher Days, attending an area officer training workshop and chapter officer retreat, and promoting National FFA Week and agricultural education through local media.
Community development events include helping eighth graders build bird houses and squirrel feeders. They also host two community blood drives each year.
The top chapters are submitted to the National FFA Organization where they compete for the National FFA Chapter Award. The competition will be this fall at the 86th National FFA Convention in Louisville.
The Missouri FFA has 25,062 members representing 331 chapters. The national organization has more than 550,000 members representing 7,489 local chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
