The Missouri Department of Conservation marked the start of the 2013 trout season at 6 a.m. Friday morning. At that moment an alarm sounded, signaling to the thousands of people in attendance it was time to start fishing. Spokesperson Jim Low says an estimated 8,000 people braved the winter weather to participate.
“People who come to the trout opener do that as a matter of tradition” he says. “They tend to not let much get in their way.”
Low says participants are allowed to catch the species year-round, but March 1st means they can take their bounty home.
“We open up Missouri’s four state trout parks for catch-and-keep fishing” he says. “That’s in contrast to the catch-and-release fishing that’s allowed at those four places during the Winter from the end of October to the end of February.”
Trout season runs March 1 through October 31st.
